Your baby won't sleep? Learn how to make your baby sleep through the night.
Having a baby isn’t easy. Getting them to sleep through the night is almost an impossible mission. But why your baby won't sleep? and how can you make your baby sleep through the night?
Babies sleep a lot and very irregularly. The reason it that a baby’s sleep cycles are far shorter than those of adults, and babies spend more time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep for their brain developments. REM sleep is lighter and more easily disrupted than non-REM sleep.
The sleep schedule from you baby is a work in progress: He or she will gradually sleep more at night and less in the morning or afternoon during the first three months of life. In order to solve that problem, it is important to adjust and adapt the schedule as your baby matures and develops.
Signs of sleepiness
Start a bed routine
Let your baby sleep independently
Newborn baby – 3 months
A newborn baby sleep up 16-17 hours a day, but no more than two to four hours at a time during the first weeks of life. You can already help them to establish good baby sleep habits by:
- Learning the signs of sleepiness
Most babies aren’t able to stay up much longer than two hours at a time for the first 6-8 weeks. The baby can have trouble falling asleep or get overtired when you wait longer than that to put him down.
Signs of sleepiness:
- Rubbing his/her eyes
- Being more fussy
- Pulling his/her ears
Teach the difference between day and night
Once your baby is two weeks old, you can start teaching the difference between night day and night.
- Keep the room light and bright, so your baby won’t sleep.
- Interact as much as possible with your baby.
- Maintain the place with noise so your baby won’t sleep.
- Don’t let your baby sleep during feedings.
- Keep the room dark for your baby.
- Don’t talk too much with your baby.
- Lower the noise levels to make it comfortable for your baby to sleep.
- Start a bed routine to incentivaze your baby to sleep through the night
- Getting your baby changed for bed
- Singing a lullaby
- Reading a book to your baby
- Give a goodnight kiss
- Giving your baby a bath
- Don’t rock or nurse your baby to sleep
Babies will take this in their sleeping habits and have more difficulties to learn to fall asleep on their own.
A 6 to 8 weeks old baby start to sleep for shorter periods during the day and longer periods at night. Your baby sleep period of deep, non-REM sleep expand and have shorter periods of REM sleep. However, he/she is still waking up during the nights. This is the time to establish another good sleep habit: Let your baby sleep independently
Jodi Mindell, associate director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and author of Sleeping Through the Night suggest to simply put him down when he’s sleepy but still awake.
3 months – 6 months
Babies at three months of age sleeps around 15 hours a day, including naps and nighttime sleep. They have started to develop more of a regular sleep/wake schedule and have dropped most of their night feedings.
According to experts, most babies are ready for sleep training and are capable of sleeping through the night for a stretch of 8 to 12 hours, somewhere between 4 and 6 months. A Baby that sleeps through the night for long periods may starts to wake up again during the night. This can be caused once the baby increases socially awareness or he/she learned new skills such rolling over or sitting up during the night. A latex mattress helps with keeping your baby still thought the night.
Some tips to establish good sleeping habits at this age:
- Set regular nap and bedtimes and stick to it.
The little one is a bit older now and needs to set a regular nap and sleep schedule to regulate his/her sleep patterns. You cannot depend on the signs of sleepiness anymore. If your baby has troubles falling asleep though the night, try to put him/her down earlier in their latex mattress. Being too tired can also make it hard to make your baby sleep and get a restful night.
- Stick to bedtime routines
As mentioned in the previous months, create a bedtime routine to make your baby sleep though the night.
- Wake up your baby every morning at the same time
Your baby needs a regular sleep & wake pattern to keep a predictable sleep schedule. It’s okay to wake him up when he is sleeping past his usual waking time.
- Let your baby sleep independently
If he doesn’t already get back to sleep after he wakes up briefly during the nights, he will have to learn this skill.
- Put him down when he is sleepy but awake
- Try sleep training methods: no-cry and cry-it-out techniques.
6 months – 12 months
Babies around this age, sleep around 14 hours a day including naps and nights sleep. They take also more naps during the day: in the morning, midday, early evening, maybe more. However, babies who were great sleepers may suddenly start waking up at night or have difficulty falling asleep due to cognitive and motor development and with separation anxiety. Sometimes they fall right back to sleep when you walk back in the room.
The tips for good baby sleep habits are pretty much the same as the previous months such as keeping a regular bed routine, consistent schedule and letting him fall asleep independently.
