What is a Cradle to Cradle certificate?

This Certificate comes from the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. This is a trusted NGO. They urge companies to become part of their circular economy. The goal is to assess make products that are clean and safe for humans and the environment. Only a toxin free product can be reused without being harmful. Fulfilling such requirements will not only benefit the health of people. Producing less harmful waste and reusing material in a second cycle helps to preserve the environment.

You can find the requirements in the Cradle to Cradle Product Standard. This list consists of five product criteria. A tested product receives a certain status. This goes by category. The overall grade one received will only be as high as the weakest criterion. So if 4 of 5 criteria are graded Gold and 1 is graded Bronze, the certificate will be Bronze. Therefore it is important to work on all 5 criteria with the same effort.

Vita Talalay is the only brand in the industry with Gold status. This proves commitment to the well-being of people and their environment. Living up to these standards is a continuous process. It contributes to the health of people and nature.

Let’s have a closer look at our Cradle to Cradle Gold Status…

Vita Talalay Latex Cradle-to-Cradle Gold Certification Overview

The 5 Categories of Cradle to Cradle

Material Health

Current certification level: GOLD

This test category analyses chemical components and assesses their safety for human health. Natural Vita Talalay is developed without the use of any harmful material. If your body reacts sensitively towards certain chemicals, Vita Talalay is proven to be ideal for you.

Natural Vita Talalay Latex is a patented material. It uses a recipe free of toxic components. The Eco Institut attested an off-gassing rate of 0.0. In addition to this, the FSC assures no harmful pesticides in our products.

Material Reutilization

Current certification level: GOLD

This area tests to what extent products can be reused. Unlike other types of latex, Vita Talalay Latex can be recycled to a fresh product life cycle.

A widely-spread mistake is to believe latex foam is biodegradable. The liquid latex sap degrades back to nature. This does not mean that latex foam does. Vita Talalay Latex is biodegradable, as it is never processed to become any type of foam.

Vita Talalay works on several projects to develop its products to become even more reusable. This is no simple procedure, and Vita Talalay leads the market in that sense.

Renewable Energy

Current certification level: GOLD

This criterion concerns the use of renewable energy during production processes. On this matter, Vita Talalay achieved the Certificate for European Wind.

100% of the power we use comes from wind energy. Our carbon footprint shows to be climate positive. This means, Vita Talalay consumes more CO2 than it produces. Refraining from oil-derivatives contributes to reducing carbon dioxide. So does maintenance of rubber tree plantations. Every Vita Talalay Latex double mattress consumes more than 4 kg of CO2 from the air we breathe.

We planted trees in Panama and bought credits from an FSC certified rubber plantation in Guatemala. This further reduced CO2 from our air.

Water Stewardship

Current certification level: GOLD

On this level, the efficient use and reuse of water is assessed. Tests show the proportion of wasted and reused water during production. It measures the environmental and social impact. This is done by looking at how much clean water returns to nature or industry.

Vita Talalay runs several initiatives on this matter. We filter the water used in production to return to nature as clean water.

Social Fairness

Current certification level: GOLD

Social fairness revolves around no people or natural systems being harmed. This would concern problems like child labor and deforestation.

75% of all produced rubber goes to the production of tires. Paying attention to this, we support tire producers to work sustainably. With the FSC and the RFA, we are taking the first step towards this. The next step for us is to source from certified plantations.

What is the Forest Stewardship Council?

The FSC is an NGO, promoting responsible forest management around the globe. It has the highest standards for sustainable forestry in the world.

Vita Talalay received the Chain of Custody Certificate from the FSC. This assures we can trace our latex back to its origin. This is how we know our latex comes from a sustainable, healthy, safe, and fair source.

The FSC Certificate is awarded to forests that meet the environmental, social, and economic standards. These base on their 10 principles for sustainable forestry.

Let’s have a closer look out our FSC Certificate.

What is an FSC Chain of Custody Certificate?

This certificate underlies an assessment of the whole supply chain. The FSC inspects all materials used throughout the supply chain. This includes the right use of pesticides and fertilisers.

You can recognise this quality seal by the Chain of Custody label on your product.

What is a Forest Management Certificate?

With this certificate, the FSC assures that their forestry standards are met. These regard environmental, social, and economic concerns. The inspection takes place under their 10 principles of sustainable forestry.

The quality check has two stages. There is a first assessment and a final evaluation. During the assessment, certain non-conformities may appear. The final step measures to what extent these non-conformities have been overcome. This certificate assures no non-conformities in a product.

All our plantations hold the Forest Management Certificate. Let’s learn more about the Forest Stewardship Council.

Rainforest Alliance

What is a Rainforest Alliance Certificate?

The Rainforest Alliance conserves natural diversity and secures livelihoods. They work on protecting rain forests.

The concern is in land use, business practices, and consumer behavior. The Rainforest Alliance works with farmers, foresters, and the tourism industry. They moderate the impact of forestry on the environment. Rainforest Alliance facilitates fair and stable incomes for workers and communities.

The main pillars of the Rainforest Alliance are growing forests and a healthy wildlife. This goes alongside the battle against climate change. They serve communities and improve the quality of food and farming. The Rainforest Alliance makes an effort to defend human rights. This Certificate is awarded to those who meet the standards of the Rainforest Alliance .
