Sleep on a plane is the worst: people that bump or crawl over you. It’s either too cold or too warm. The lights are too bright to let you fall asleep. However, this can all be avoided by preparing yourself for the adventure. Here are some tips and tricks in how to sleep on a plane like a baby.
Cut down carry-ons
Don’t watch TV
Avoid getting disturbed
1. Get a window seat
- It gives you some control over the window shade.
- You avoid people climbing over you to go to the toilet.
- You will have something to lean against.
Also choose whether you want the window seat on the left or right side of the plane. According to Heather Poole, experience flight attendant, you should chose the side of the plane based on the side you sleep at home. You should sleep on a plane like you would sleep at home.
2. Avoid the last row
If you want to have a good sleep on a plane, you must avoid at all costs the last row. This location is often near the toilet, which can be noisy and have an unpleasant smell. Aside from the last row, sitting near the back or front can be favourable due to the fact that there are often more seats free. However, usually it’s also noisier in that area.
3. Cut down carry-ons
Stick to one single carry-on bag instead of two, by carrying 2 you increase the chances of having one under your feet. Keep the necessities near the top of the bag, so that you can pull out the items before you stow them in the overhead compartment.
4. Skip caffeine
Coffee or soda makes falling asleep much harder with the caffeine running through your body. Instead choose for water or juices before boarding and when the cart comes around. They will provide you the hidratation you need plus you will be able to sleep on a plane much easier.
5. Blankets and pillows
Board early to check if you have a set of blanket and pillow. You can ask the flight attendant when there is none or if you need an extra set. Furthermore, bring your own latex pillow or neck pillow for more comfort. Turn your neck pillow around if you tend to nod forward while sleeping. Don’t get a stiff neck while you sleep on a plane.
6. Free your feet
Wear shoes that you can easily slip on and off. However, going barefoot on the plane can make them swell and not to mention the odour issues. Wear clean socks to avoid these problems. Some overseas airlines even provide socks to keep them warm and stimulate circulation flowing.
7. Don’t watch TV
TV and movies can keep you up the entire flight. Your brain stays active because of the light from the screens. Try listening to southing sounds and music instead to mute the noisy environment. Sleep on a plane should be peaceful.
8. Avoid getting disturbed
Give the flight attendant a heads up that you want to sleep on a plane to avoid getting disturbed when the cart comes around. Another way is to buckle your belt over your blanket so it’s always visible.
9. Get an eye mask
You could take a eye mask from home to sleep on a plane. Some airlines provide eye masks, but take one with you to be sure. This way you can avoid all the lights that can disturb you from falling asleep and avoid talkative neighbours.
If everything fails, you can consult your doctor to prescribe medications that can help you to fall asleep and sleep on a plane.
11. 90 minutes nap
Aim for a 90 minutes nap to avoid waking up even sleepier then before. Your brain goes to various stages during your sleep, each cycle lasts for 90 minutes. According to professor Richard Wiseman and author of night school, waking up after a sleep cycle will bring you closest to your normal waking state.
12. Wake up before landing
Set your alarm 45 minutes before landing to fully wake up. You will have time left to go to the toilet, gather your items or drink a cup of coffee. Sleep on a plane was never so comfortable.

Why should you purchase Vita Talalay® products?
There are many reasons to buy a Vita Talalay. All benefits are linked to the open, round cell structure, that makes you sleep fresh and with a lifting comfort. There is more explanation here.
Is Vita Talalay safe without being organic ?
Food can be fully organic. But with a latex mattress that does not make sense. Harvested organic latex always need an addition of some inorganic materials to process it into a latex mattress, topper or pillow. Organic certifications do some traceability of the latex itself but do not trace whether the added inorganic materials (needed to get from liquid to a solid material) are safe. All Vita Talalay is Oekotex 100 Class 1. With Natural Vita Talalay we even have two more certifications that test the end product to be safe. And on top Cradle to Cradle chemists have analysed not only the latex, but also the inorganic additives. It shows that the latex and the additives contains zero harmful materials for the health of humans and the environment.
